Throop Learning Garden

Throop Memorial Church  •  300 South Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena

Throop Learning Garden is an example of how we can transform our environment through community. We worked together to found a garden based on permaculture principles. We began with Bermuda grass and hardpan clay. We now enjoy a garden that includes a raised bed food garden, a fruit tree food forest, a drought tolerant native garden, demonstrations of water harvesting techniques, soil building, uses for “urbanite” and other recyclables, and comfortable places to congregate. We also host a wealth of birds and beneficial insects, including praying mantises, many moths, and butterflies.
Garden work days are most Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30.

The new year marks a turning point for NELA Transition/Throop Learning Garden. We have enjoyed success at creating a garden through community! We reveled in the transformation from weed patch to beautiful, productive garden. The exhilaration of the process propelled us to completion. We celebrated with a wider community of friends, neighbors, and city officials.

Now we face the next phase: the task of expanding and sustaining our garden and community through time. Now we envision our potential, endurance, and continued purpose. How can we best utilize and preserve this resource? How can we further develop and honor the community that has coalesced around the garden? How can we link our garden with other similar projects to form a viable biotic and community network?

Many ideas circulate. Sandy and Lucinda have excellent ideas on developing and coordinating garden volunteers. Rev. Tera brings new concepts for classes and community activities. Ginko has a long, interesting list of projected workshops. Mark offers the potential to link garden systems throughout the area. We have offers to work with various Pasadena city officials on a variety of projects. All these voices and many more will be vital to the garden’s flourishing. And as the garden flourishes, so will we!
