NELA Transition is a community group working on positive changes in our community as we face global warming, peak oil and economic decline. We share our skills working on projects which increase our local resilience and strengthen community connections. Our members are located in the Los Angeles neighborhoods including Pasadena, Altadena, Highland Park and Eagle Rock. nelatransition.org

The ‘In Transition 2.0′ team have had a sneak preview of Rob’s now-complete manuscript and meetings are well underway to co-ordinate this huge film effort. We’re consulting with various Transition bods to ensure we use all the resources at our disposal and create a film that reflects the diverse goings on in Transition around the world. Some contributors from the first film have been in touch to get involved with this second one and lots of other interesting people have responded to my first call out.

A Century of Challenges, with economic analyst Nicole Foss

Housing values. Budget cuts. High gas prices. We're bound to bounce back soon and then things will be "normal" again. Right?

Wrong, says internationally acclaimed energy and economic analyst Nicole Foss. "We will see a big shakeup of who has what. The people who do well are not necessarily going to be the people who are wealthy now."

Foss views peak oil and the ongoing collapse of global finance as a "perfect storm," which threatens to trigger wealth destruction, social discontent, and global conflict.

Writing under the pen name Stoneleigh, Foss is co-editor of the blog "The Automatic Earth." She integrates finance, energy, environment, psychology, population, and real politik. She is touring the U.S. and will be appearing in the Los Angeles area on two select evenings.

This potluck was planned at a recent meeting of members of local community-strengthening and reskilling organizations. It is time to put our heads and hearts and resources together to share info and ideas on community building. How else but over food! First Learning Garden Work Party

Volunteers from NELA Transition and Throop Unitarian-Universalist Church worked together on Saturday, April 23 to lay the groundwork for a Learning Garden on the church's site in Pasadena. Their efforts were the result of a decision by both organizations to pursue a partnership to create a community space to bring people together to share skills that can make our community more resilient.Read More

THE END OF SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?

Learning Garden Planning Meeting

Bike Week: Family Night Tuesday,May 17th, 5:30pm – 8:00pm
Presented by C.I.C.L.E. and the City of Pasadena

Join Mayor Bill Bogaard of Pasadena and other local officials at a family-friendly event promoting bicycling as a safe and sustainable transportation alternative. Festivities include a petting zoo, raffle prizes, and a REI Bike Clinic.

At 6pm we will embark on a short 3-mile ride through the Civic Center allowing new riders and younger riders a safe venue for them to practice their riding skills. Everyone's invited, tell your friends!
