Throop Learning Garden

Sunday, June 30, 2013
8:30 am–10:30 am

Throop U.U. Church
300 So. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena

Here's what's in store:

  • Earth based meditation 8:30-9am in fruit guild.
  • Unwrapping and finishing the hypertufa bird bath Jim B. led us to construct last week!  Thanks, Jim!
  • Light general maintenance, pruning, watering.
  • Continue mulching & taping the reclaimed Los Robles lawn. We still have one small section of grass by flagpole.
  • Harvesting veggies & flowers (volunteers may share harvest).
  • Picking & arranging some flowers for the lunch tables.

Two items will affect us Sunday:

First, It will be an extremely hot day, so we will be seeking shade by 10:30 am.
Be sure to bring a hat & sunscreen. We will provide water.

Second, the Pasadena Marathon takes place Sunday, so street closures will be an obstacle.
Check online for times of street closures, & plan your travel accordingly.

And of course, there's a delicious potluck lunch after the church service. All are welcome!

Thanks again to all who participated in the organizational meeting last Sunday! Your thoughts,
efforts, and creative ideas are allowing the garden to grow so beautifully.

See you Sunday!

Special Garden Meeting at Noon!

We are having a Throop Learning Garden Meeting at noon at the church on the back patio.
This will also include members of the church, who want to be involved in the garden.
We will be discussing/planning some of the ideas that have arisen from visioning by Throop Church and the Throop Learning Garden gardeners. This includes: monthly events, organizing  the "satellite" garden campaign(the garden linkage idea), and general outreach for sustainability.

Please come and lend your energy and ideas.

And of course, there's a delicious potluck lunch after the church service. All are welcome!

See you Sunday!

Our Economics group meets to talk about strategies for creating a more equitable, environmentally and socially responsible economy, and preserving our local economic resilience. Meetings take place roughly once a month and are open to all, although space may be limited. This month’s meeting will be potluck, so bring a food item to share.

A Rose is a Rose

It’s been a little more than three years since NELA held it's first steering meeting. Since then we’ve hosted numerous potlucks and awareness raisings. Our newsletter list has grown to over 400 subscribers. We’ve created award winning projects and have built some respectable ties with parts of the Pasadena city government, most notably two city council people and the Public Works Department. At the Throop Garden dedication last November, Mayor Bill Bogaard said “I am hoping that the organization (NELA) might consider changing from ‘Northeast LA Transition’ to ‘Central Pasadena Transition’ in light of the historic importance of this event.” Well, we’ve been considering, and we are going to change our name to “Transition Pasadena”. We will have a new website that Qrys is putting together, and will transition over in the coming months.

We have two compelling reasons for this change. First, the heart of any transition initiative is the building of personal relationships. Through working together on projects, these personal relationships deepen and form a web of relationships or a community. A key ingredient in this process is hyper locality. Working with people who live close by, makes this process more do-able. As we move deeper into transition, a strong community will be an essential asset.
